Test drive the new Swedish super simulator complex – shipping companies’ response to personnel shortage

Swedish super simulator complex

has converted its former offices on Donsö outside Gothenburg into a state-of-the-art maritime educational center, to increase the access to competent onboard personnel. Manning is one of the biggest challenges in shipping today. On August 23-30 we invite the media to test drive the advanced ship simulator. Expect an exciting, photogenic and cinematic reportage!

The Donsö Maritime Training Center is inaugurated at the end of August, opening up to shipping companies and maritime institutions in need of education, assessment and certification of personnel. Extensive interest has already been expressed, as the rapid development in the shipping industry demands constant updates of onboard routines and seafarer skills. Greener shipping, the upcoming SIRE 2.0 program and the adoption of newer and smarter technologies pose a huge skilling challenge to shipping companies.

”Furetank has ordered several new-buildings to be delivered in the coming years, and manning these ships is a great challenge. The situation is the same for many of our fellow shipping companies. The lack of access to simulator environments has been a bottleneck for us. This easily accessible educational center will be a positive contribution to shipping”, says Jonas Gunnarsson, personnel manager at Furetank.

The simulator complex has been designed by Wärtsilä, one of the world’s leading maritime simulator manufacturers. Physical simulation bridges are combined with virtual, augmented and mixed reality applications. Together they create highly realistic learning environments for navigation, maneuvering, eco driving, docking, cargo handling, safety procedures as well as proper use of new ship technology like shore-power connection or LNG/LBG bunkering.

A multiplayer feature allows interaction between captain/pilot, bridge/engine room, for training in communications skills required in real-life scenarios. An award-winning cloud simulation solution allows connecting to other training centers and performing remote joint exercises. 50 different vessels and more than 40 waterways can be simulated, as well as moving through ice or rough sea.

On August 23, we invite journalists to test drive the simulator. For those present at Donsö Shipping Meet on August 28-30, we also offer test driving and interviews.
