Prada Linea Rossa torna a fianco dell’aviatore italiano alla vigilia della Preliminary Regatta
Vilanova– Pilota air race ed acrobatico, ex pilota commerciale ed istruttore di volo, Medaglia al Valore Atletico Coni, primo e unico italiano a qualificarsi e a vincere nella disciplina della Red Bull Air Race, Dario Costa è anche nel libro del Guinness World Record e vanta oltre 10 record mondiali, tra cui quello di primo pilota ad aver volato attraverso una galleria, anzi due.
Alla lista, lunghissima, delle performance estreme compiute dall’aviatore italiano, si aggiunge quella organizzata a Vilanova i la Geltrù (Spagna), alla vigilia della Preliminary Regatta inaugurale della 37^ America’s Cup: il 12 settembre, infatti, tre giorni prima dell’inizio delle regate che aprono ufficialmente l’edizione 2024 della Coppa America, Costa ha inanellato un altro record mondiale, compiendo uno slalom al cardiopalma tra l’imbarcazione AC40 di Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli e quella di Alinghi Red Bull Racing, timonate, rispettivamente, da Jimmy Spithill e Francesco Bruni e da Nicolas Charbonnie.
L’attività è stata preparata meticolosamente dal pilota con l’aiuto del suo ingegnere di gara per assicurarsi di essere sempre ed esattamente nella posizione prevista. «Non esiste alcun margine di improvvisazione», spiegava Costa prima dell’impresa; «tutto deve essere pianificato al millesimo, perché si tratta di un’operazione che dura solo un paio di secondi». Se la gincana tra due punti fissi non è una novità per i piloti air race, quella tra due oggetti in movimento è, invece, una “prima assoluta” a livello mondiale. «Se in gara urto uno dei piloni imbottiti, al massimo prendo una penalità», spiega l’aviatore; «qui, invece, si tratta di fare uno slalom tra due imbarcazioni che si muovono, velocissime e basse sull’acqua. Toccarle non è un’opzione».
Mentre i team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli e Alinghi Red Bull Racing veleggiavano sui rispettivi AC40 uno davanti all’altro a una distanza di circa 150 m (su uno specchio di mare opportunamente interdetto alla navigazione), Costa è decollato dall’Aerodromo di Igualada-Òdena (distante circa 20 miglia da Vilanova i la Geltrù), ed è arrivato alle loro spalle volando a circa 200 nodi sul suo monoposto Zivko Edge 540 (450 Hp). Immediatamente dopo si è abbassato e ha compiuto un velocissimo zig-zag tra le imbarcazioni.
Se la preparazione e il lavoro di squadra sono elementi imprescindibili per la riuscita di un’operazione così complessa (Costa era assistito da due elicotteri e, a terra via radio, dal suo ingegnere di fiducia, Alvaro Navas), molto importante è anche l’abbigliamento tecnico, che deve garantire sicurezza e libertà di movimenti.
Alla luce di una collaborazione ormai consolidata con l’atleta, tesa a promuovere lo sport e l’innovazione, Prada Linea Rossa ha infatti creato per Dario Costa una tuta su misura che unisce il proprio know-how con la lunga e consolidata esperienza del record-man: il risultato è una tuta realizzata con tessuti con tecnologia Nomex, caratterizzati da fibre ignifughe ed elastiche, abbinati a filati di maglia per essere anche traspiranti e migliorare quindi i movimenti e le prestazioni dell’atleta. I tagli della tuta sono decorativi e funzionali allo stesso tempo, in quanto facilitano i movimenti, mentre le parti protettive per gomiti e ginocchia sono state ridisegnate da Prada secondo i principi dell’anatomia, per evocare un design futuristico.
«È andata molto meglio di quanto mi aspettassi», ha detto Dario Costa; «nessun pilota air race aveva mai fatto uno slalom tra due oggetti in movimento e quindi era naturale avere un po’ di tensione, ma sono riuscito a fare tutto quello che avevo programmato. Sono rimasto impressionato dalla precisione e dalla bravura dei timonieri delle imbarcazioni: andavano dritti come su dei binari, quindi per me è stato facilissimo. Anche le condizioni meteo mi hanno aiutato con un vento sui 10 nodi, perfetto per loro e perfetto per me. Sono molto felice, oggi ho conquistato un altro record!».
«Non è stata una classica giornata di vela», ha commentato Jimmy Spithill, uno dei timonieri di Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. «Navigare con un aeroplano che vola tra gli scafi non è una cosa che succede tutti i giorni. Se è stata dura? Secondo me è stata molto più dura per Dario… E’ incredibile quanto vicino sia riuscito ad arrivare; alla fine noi abbiamo semplicemente mantenuto la nostra posizione e lui ha fatto tutto il lavoro. Per me oggi è stato un po’ Natale, perché ho la licenza di volo e vedere da vicino un atleta del calibro di Dario è stato davvero un regalo speciale. Una cosa divertente è che quando fai il corso per il brevetto la prima cosa che ti dicono è: stai lontano dall’acqua, ma lui sfiorava letteralmente il mare!».

Prada Linea Rossa returns alongside the Italian aviator on the eve of the Preliminary Regatta
An air race and acrobatic pilot, former commercial pilot and flight instructor with a Coni Athletic Medal for Valour and the first and only Italian to qualify and win in the Red Bull Air Race discipline, Dario Costa is also in the Guinness World Record book and boasts over 10 world records, including that of the first pilot to have flown through a tunnel, or rather two.
Adding to a long list of extreme performances executed by the Italian aviator is the one organised in Vilanova i la Geltrù (Spain), on the eve of the inaugural Preliminary Regatta of the 37th America’s Cup.
On September 12th, three days before the start of the races that officially open the 2024 edition of the America’s Cup, Costa scored another world record, performing a heart-stopping slalom between the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and Alinghi Red Bull Racing AC40 boats, helmed respectively by Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni and by Nicolas Charbonnier.
The task was meticulously prepared by the pilot with the help of his race engineer, to ensure that he was always and exactly in the intended position. «There is no room for improvisation», explained Costa before the challenge; «everything has to be planned down to the smallest detail, it is an operation that only lasts a couple of seconds». And if the gymkhana between two fixed points is nothing new for air racers, the one between two moving objects is, on the other hand, a ‘world first’. «If I hit one of the padded pillars in a race, the worst case is that I get a penalty», explains the aviator; «here, on the contrary, it’s a slalom between two moving boats that are very fast and low on the water. Touching them is not an option».
While the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and Alinghi Red Bull Racing teams sailed their AC40s in front of each other at a distance of about 150 m (on a stretch of sea closed to navigation), Costa took off from the Igualada-Òdena Aerodrome (about 20 miles from Vilanova i la Geltrù), and swooped down behind them, flying at about 200 knots on his Zivko Edge 540 (450 Hp) single-seater. Immediately afterwards he dropped back and performed a lightning zig-zag between the boats.
If preparation and teamwork are essential elements for the success of such a complex operation (Costa was assisted by two helicopters and, on the ground via radio, by his trusted engineer, Alvaro Navas), the technical clothing is also very important as it must guarantee safety and freedom of movement.
Prada Linea Rossa, in its now consolidated collaboration with the athlete, and aiming to promote sports and innovation, has created a made-to-measure suit for Dario Costa, bringing together its technical know-how with the record-man’s long and consolidated experience. The result is a suit crafted with Nomex technology textiles, characterized by fireproof and elastic fibres, combined with knitted yarns for breathability to improve the athlete’s movements and performance. The cuts of the suit are both decorative and functional, to facilitate movements, while the protective parts for elbows and knees have been redesigned by Prada, based on the principles of anatomy, to evoke a futuristic design.
«It went much better than I expected», said Dario Costa; «no air racer had ever executed a slalom between two moving objects, so it was natural to feel some tension, but I managed to do what I had planned. I was impressed by the precision and skill of the boats’ helmsmen: they went so straight it was as if they were on rails, so it was very easy for me. The weather conditions also helped, with 10 knots of wind: perfect for them and perfect for me. I’m very happy, I set another record today!».
«It was not a classic sailing day», commented Jimmy Spithill, one of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s helmsmen. «Sailing with an airplane coming through you is not something that happens every day. Was it tough? I think it was much tougher for Dario… it’s amazing how close he managed to get; in the end we just held our position and he did all the work. For me today was a bit like Christmas because I have a pilot’s license and to see an athlete of Dario’s calibre up close was really a special gift. The funny thing is that when you take the course for your license, the first thing they tell you is: stay away from the water, but he was literally skimming over the sea!».
