With technological improvements and new exceptional crew members within the first European sports team, the Esimit Europa 2 yacht is ready to break the course record at the Giraglia Rolex Cup.
The season opening 2012 will bring a fresh breath of air into the sailing world. Not only is Esimit Europa 2 back from its winter base technologically improved, it also got a new strong partner by its side, which will be announced during the 60th edition of the Giraglia Rolex Cup. At the offshore race from Saint Tropez to San Remo, Esimit Europa 2 and its crew of 18 outstanding sailors are hoping for the third consecutive victory.
242 nautical miles are ahead of Esimit Europa 2 and its truly European Crew participating at the Giraglia Rolex Cup offshore race from Saint Tropez to San Remo starting on June 13th. Jochen Schümann (GER), Juan Vila (SPA), Alberto Bolzan (ITA) and Vasilij Žbogar (SLO) are in 2012 again competing for Europe. Accompanied by many experienced sailors from the whole European continent, as Anton Sergeev (RUS) or the new team members Albert Jacobsoone (FRA), one of the best young sailors in the world Boris Hermann (GER), Ignacio Braquehais (SPA) and also bringing rich experience to the team is Frank O’Leary (IRL).
The 60th edition of Giraglia Rolex Cup, one of the most renowned races in Europe which regularly attract about 200 yachts from all over Europe, will mark another milestone for the Esimit Europa project. The race, with a rich tradition, is organized by the Yacht Club Italiano in association with the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez and the Yacht Club de France. If the weather conditions will allow, the “blue giant” is going after the course record on the route from Saint Tropez to San Remo via famous La Giraglia rock. The team is well prepared to successfully counter the vagaries of the wind, the twists and the tactical challenges presented by the race course. The crew is hoping for better weather conditions that the year before (Saint Tropez to Genoa), when extremely light winds and occasional dead calms at open seas challenged the crew.
This year the Esimit Europa 2 will try to conquer all five regattas attending; Giraglia Rolex Cup, Palermo – Monte Carlo, Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Bernetti Lombardini Cup and Barcolana. It will also try to beat a 9 year old speed record from Monaco to Porto Cervo (Sardinia, Italy) approved by the International Sailing Federation, under the World Sailing Speed Record Council Rule 21 (c) in a Powered Sailing System category. In 2013 the message of a united Europe will, besides the Mediterranean, be shared at some of the most demanding regattas in Germany, United Kingdom and Sweden.
