E' stato completato il nuovissimo dizionario di Inglese Marittimo, pubblicato dalla Witherby Seamship International. Con quest'opera, frutto di anni di ricerca e consultazione di migliaia di pubblicazioni a carattere internazionale, l'autore Pietro Del Rosso si prefigge lo scopo di produrre un moderno ed aggiornato strumento di lavoro di facile interpretazione per tutto il personale marittimo.
Il dizionario raccoglie tutti i termini più comuni relativi all'arte marinara: costruzioni navali, navigazione (astronomica, elettronica, iperbolica, piana), macchine e motori marini, termodinamica, strumentazione, automazione ed impianti di bordo, macchine utensili, tipi di imbarcazioni antiche e moderne, segnalamento marittimo, commercio marittimo (documenti di bordo, trasporti marittimi), pesca costiera e d'altura, vela.
Tra le innumerevoli novità dell'opera vi è un costante riferimento dei lemmi e delle espressioni allo S.M.C.P. (Standard Marine Communication Phrases).
Lo SMCP si prefigge lo scopo di aggirare il problema della lingua nelle comunicazioni, in quanto gli equipaggi multinazionali a bordo delle navi (comprese le navi battenti bandiera italiana) sono ormai la norma, ed eventuali fraintendimenti nelle comunicazioni sono spesso causa di gravi incidenti in mare.
L'altro punto forte dell'opera è rappresentato dalla sezione “Abbreviations and Acronyms” anch'essa frutto di molti anni di incessante consultazione delle pubblicazione e dei siti di istituti ed organizzazioni internazionali marittime : I.M.O. (International Maritime Organization), INMARSAT (International Maritime Satellite Organization), W.M.U. (World Maritime University), M.A.I.B. (Maritime Accident Investigation Branch), ISF (International Shipping Federation), US Coast Guard, M.C.A. (Maritime and Coast Guard Agency), A.M.S.A. (Australian Maritime Safety Authority), solo per citarne i più noti.
Con la seconda edizione il dizionario risulta enormemente migliorato, sia in termini di quantità che di qualità. Infatti, oltre ad includere un maggiore numero di termini, abbreviazioni, ed acronimi aggiornati, esso comprende un elevato numero di immagini e di tabelle che rendono più funzionale il dizionario stesso.
Dalla terminologia connessa alla vela sino agli avveniristici impianti di controllo e di automazione, tutto il personale marittimo (coperta, macchine di camera, di cucina ed addetto ai servivi vari) ed i diportisti troveranno sicuramente in quest'opera un'adeguata risposta alle proprie esigenze.

It is with great pleasure that I am presenting you a new Maritime English Dictionary, published by Witherby Seamanship International. Through this work, which is the fruit of years of research and consultation of thousands of international publications, the author has produced a modern, updated and friendly-user working tool for maritime personnel.
The dictionary contains all of the most common terms relevant to Seafaring:
Shipbuilding, Navigation (Celestial, Electronic, Hyperbolic, Plain Navigation),
Marine Engines, Thermodynamics, Instrumentation, Automation and systems on
board, Machine tools, types of ancient and modern vessels, maritime signalling,
maritime signalling, maritime trade (shipping documents, maritime transport),
Coastal and deep-sea, sailing fishing, sailing.
A significant and unique feature of this dictionary, is that it continuously refers to expressions of the SMCP (Standard Marine Communication Phrases). As the name suggests, the SMCP is made up of terms, expressions or phrases
covering all the main fields connected with safety in ship-shore shore-ship, and
intership communications.
The SMCP is designed to bypass the problem of the language barriers in
communication. Multinational crews onboard ships (including Italian registered vessels) are nowadays commonplace, and communication misunderstandings are often the cause of serious accidents at sea.
Another feature of the work is the ‘Abbreviations and Acronyms' section, which has been developed through consultation of the publications and websites of international maritime organizations such as I.M.O. (International Maritime Organization), INMARSAT (International Maritime Satellite Organization), W.M.U. (World Maritime University), M.A.I.B. (Maritime Accident Investigation Branch), I.S.F. The dictionary is greatly improved in this second edition, both in terms of quantity and quality. In fact, in addition to incorporate a higher number of updated items, abbreviations and acronyms, it also includes a considerable number of pictures and tables which make the dictionary more functional.
From the terminology connected with sailing through to modern control and
automation systems, maritime personnel (deck, engine, catering and services) and yachtsmen will always find an appropriate answer.

Prof. Pietro del Rosso is a member of I.M.E.C. (International Maritime English Conference), and he carries out Maritime English courses for officers and ratings of the Merchant Navy and sea pilots.
